Schoolchildren to get human rights lessons

English schoolchildren are to be given lessons in human rights in an attempt to promote tolerance and fight extremism.

The Speak Truth to Power project, which is run by an American organisation, the Robert F Kennedy Center for Justice & Human Rights, will address issues including slavery, religious freedom, political violence and repression, the BBC reported.

Education Secretary Nicky Morgan will formally launch the scheme next Monday along with the project’s founder, human rights activist Kerry Kennedy, who is the daughter of Robert Kennedy.

Following the passing of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015, schools now have a legal requirement to “prevent people from being drawn into terrorism”.
