M.I.A. has used samples of her lawyer’s advice in her latest song.
The rapper has released an extended version of her 2013 track ‘Boom’. It begins with her lawyer’s voice discussing M.I.A.’s lawsuit against the NFL, which sued her after her controversial performance at the 2012 Super Bowl.
“They’re suing you for damaging their fantastic reputation by flipping the bird,” explains the lawyer, who has not been identified.
“The other part, they want to reserve the right to sue you later, to make you pay for any damages they have. If they come after you, they can only come after you for half of your income over $500,000 per year, or all of your income over £5m per year.”
The dispute was eventually settled out of court.
