Freshfields’ vac scheme goes global with introduction of foreign seat

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer will be giving potential trainees a taste of the jet set lifestyle after launching a foreign seat for vacation scheme students.

The magic circle firm has confirmed it is offering 18 vacation scheme students the opportunity to spend a week in either Amsterdam, Brussels, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, Paris or New York as part of their vacation scheme.

Trainee recruitment consultant Ben Staveley said: “As we’re a leading international firm we wanted to add an international element to our vacation scheme. We always say that we want our vacation schemes to be ’real’ for candidates because, ultimately, that’s what’s going to be of most value for them in spending time with the firm.”

Currently, the firm runs three lots of three week vacation schemes from the end of June each year, taking around 20 candidates for each placement.

Six candidates from each vacation scheme have been given the opportunity to spend an extra week at the end of their initial placement in one of the firm’s chosen foreign offices.

The candidates were picked by Freshfields after producing a written application. When they take part on the mini-secondment, the would-be lawyers will be mentored by a designated trainee or junior associate.
