Editor’s weekly: Essential summer reading

Commercial awareness is a phrase that recruiters and candidates alike are completely obsessed with.

We can’t remember a week when someone hasn’t asked us to define what is arguably an over-used buzzword.

Having decided enough was enough we asked Hogan Lovells’ director of knowledge, research and learning Chris Stoakes to pen a must-read feature for this summer’s edition of Lawyer 2B to help give your commercial awareness credentials a boost before embarking on those all important vacation schemes.

Indeed, if you do have a summer placement coming up then you’d be a fool not to read the “How to Survive Vacation Schemes” feature, which can also be found in the forthcoming issue.

Also in this edition, which is out this week, we look at how social networking is starting to play an ever-bigger part in the world of graduate recruitment and how you can use it wisely to secure your dream job in law.

And if you don’t believe us watch out for the story about a law student who managed to get a stint of work experience on the back of a Twitter update!

From the world-wide web to the next global sporting event, we speak to London Olympic 2012 hopefuls who are managing to carve out a successful legal career as well as fit in some pretty grueling training in time for the forthcoming games.

But for those of you who think that all sounds a bit like too much hard work, there are always your Law Society Ball pictures to keep you amused!

Check out who was wearing what, with who and how each university managed to pull off some pretty amazing parties in spite of the fact that many sponsorship budgets have been squeezed.

So make sure your create some time between exams to grab your copy from either your careers library or law faculty.
