RAE opens new doors for law depts

University law department league tables have been reshuffled by a funding exercise to reward research excellence.

Figures from the nationwide Research Assessment Exercise reveal that eight departments have been awarded the top five-star rating, a grade which indicates that more than half of the research activity submitted is of an internationally excellent standard.

Newcomers at the top of the table include the universities of Keele, Southampton and Durham, while Westminster University has also made a jump from grade two to five.

Academics from non-traditional departments hope that it will make law firms look further afield when recruiting graduates onto training programmes.
