New family-friendly employment laws dubbed as mere lip service

NEW FAMILY-friendly employment laws are unlikely to signal the end of law firms long hours culture,despite a Government drive for more fiexible methods of working. Under new legislation due in April,parents with children under six or disabled children up to the age of 18 will be able to request a change in their working patterns.
But Manches employment partner Jonathan Maude described the draft regulations as lip service to family-flexible issues ,which will do little to help employees. He added:I m sure the new legislation will boost the number of requests that employees make,but at the end of the day you have to look at how it will work in practice.
Because bosses will be armed with Government-approved reasons why such requests should be refused, Maude fears that it will be too
easy to say no. It looks as if employers will just have to prove that they ve crossed their ts and have been through the proper procedure before refusing,said Maude. [Any successful application ] will very much depend on the attitude of the employer and the
flexibility they have generally.
