… as Four New Square offers massive pay packets to pupils

Four New Square is offering its pupils guaranteed earnings of £120,000 within the first three years of their tenancy.

Pupils starting this autumn are offered £27,500 for the year, which rises by £5,000-£10,000 for the second six months, when they take on their own cases.

Any of the three tenants taken on in October who do not make the £120,000 (after chambers&#39 expenses) by the end of the three-year period will be entitled to an interest-free loan to make up the difference.

“But we&#39re so confident that won&#39t be necessary that we haven&#39t established any standard terms of repayment yet,” said Four New Square barrister Graham Chapman, secretary to the pupillage committee.

In November, Lawyer 2B reported that Maitland Cham-bers was offering a guarantee of up to £100,000 in the first three years. Pupils at One Essex Court are paid £35,000, which can be split over two years to help fund the Bar Vocational Course. Senior clerk at the set Paul Shrubsall said: “They don&#39t need to guarantee earnings. After the first three years, the levels normally six figures.
