20 Essex Street silk promoted to the bench

20 Essex Street silk Richard Plender QC has been appointed a judge in the High Court with effect from 31 January.

Plender, who was called to the bar in 1972 and took silk in 1989, will join the Queen’s Bench Division.

He becomes the fourth silk at the set to join the bench. Plender follows in the footsteps of Lord Justices Rix, Moore-Bick and Mr Justice Gross.

Commenting on Plender’s elevation to the bench, Iain Milligan QC, head of chambers at 20 Essex Street, said: “Whilst Chambers will greatly miss him, we wish him every success in this new and exciting stage of his career”

Plender’s appointment follows the announcement that Mr Justice Gray will retire as a High Court judge on 13 February.
