  • Saves £12,000? Good for them.

Sounds about as valuable as re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic

  • This seriously constitutes a news item? If they have deferred the majority of their 2013 trainee intake to 2014 and their 2014 intake to 2015 presumably they won't be recruiting trainees (or as many) for 2015 at this stage. That's the date that most of these summer students would have been looking at. So I'd guess that was the reason they decided to pull it rather than saving 12k.

  • Even by the standards of a Scottish law firm in straitened times, £12k is chicken feed -- this move will have been motivated instead by the demand on partner and staff time.

  • What a contemptible and short-sighted decision, to harm your firm's reputation by disappointing (and, frankly, screwing over) some students to save what is, in the great scheme of things, a pittance. It is depressing to hear so many law firm partners bemoaning the way staff, of all levels, don't feel "loyalty to the firm" like in the old days, without realising that the root cause is that many law firm partners show a similar lack of loyalty the other way, and don't seem to feel any sense of moral obligation to young lawyers or prospective lawyers to whom they have made commitments that mean very little financially to the firm, but a huge amount to the affected individuals. Shameful.

  • With events alone the real terms cost is surely going to be closer to £20k they saved? Still not very much for the PR effect of pulling the rug out from under candidates who were clearly good enough to get on the scheme in the first place and accordingly probably good enough to get training contracts elsewhere...

In addition, even if they were looking at the fact they probably wouldn't recruit these candidates, they surely realised that the experience would be of enormous benefit to those 24 in the long run and by denying them the chance they have put a serious dent in their job prospects.

I remember how pleased I was way back when I was first offered a summer scheme, and how helpful it was. To have had that chance taken away must be really disappointing- feel desperately sorry for those guys and D&W thoroughly deserve any bad press they get because of this.

  • The ones writing all this rubbish up about DW are probably the ones who just took took took from the DW coffers whilst at DW, spending most of their time (non-chargeable!) on golf courses, lunches or sun beds!

You're the ones who should be ashamed...

  • Unfortunately I'm one of those lucky people whose Dundas vac scheme has been cancelled. It's a real ball-ache, I must say. I wouldn't have minded so much if they'd cancelled early so I could at least attempt to make other plans but to leave it so late is quite the slap in the face.

  • From the sound of it "Give me d'hope" is one of les miserables who is unlucky enough to be stuck at DW and is clinging on out of hope.

There is probably only one person you're referring to, and I'm sure that person has better things to be doing than trawling the likes of the lawyer, ROF etc posting negative comments over and again under the guise of anon.

  • With all the partner departures recently in London they'd probably be more vac schemers than partners, at least they wouldn't have trouble finding a desk.
