Slaughter and May has achieved an 87.5 per cent newly qualified (NQ) retention rate for September 2012.
The top 10 firm has announced it is keeping 42 out of its 48 September qualifying trainee solicitors.
Of the 48 trainees, two resigned before offers were made, while the firm made offers to 42 of the remaining 46 trainees.
This is a drop for the firm that achieved a 90 per cent NQ retention rate for March 2012 (23 February 2012) and a 100 per cent rate in September 2011.
The news comes after SNR Denton revealed an 83 per cent retention rate (28 June 2012), and Farrer & Co and Jones Day revealed 100 per cent NQ retention rates for September 2012 (14 June 2012).
