Cobbetts’ legal practice course provider the College of Law (CoL) has said it has been “encouraged” by how the firm is dealing with its trainees.
This morning the news emerged that the Manchester firm is set to enter administration and is looking for buyers after filing a notice to appoint administrators on Monday (30 January 2013).
Reacting to the news, Sarah Hutchinson, board member for business development at the CoL, which has provided a bespoke LPC to the firm since 2006, said: “Cobbetts is on the front foot regarding their trainees and we understand that they’ll be contacting all their trainees on a one-to-one basis within the next 24 hours.
“The firm appears to be working hard to help their trainees and we at the College of Law are offering every possible support to our students” she added.
“This is very early days but it appears to us that Cobbetts has clearly thought this through with regard to their trainees. Trainees have been considered very seriously and the firm has addressed their minds to the situation – we’re encouraged by that. Over the years we’ve seen that Cobbetts has very decent partners and although it’s early days we’re sure they’ll continue to treat their trainees with every consideration.”
Earlier today the SRA said it “doesn’t have responsibility for trainees” at Cobbetts and will only become involved if training contracts are transferred to other firms (30 January 2013).
