Eight of the UK’s biggest firms are supporting a graduate recruitment event for LGBT students this December.
DiversCity will bring together students with associates, partners and graduate recruiters for networking and a panel session involving partners from various firms, which will include question and answer sessions.
“It’s an interactive day and an opportunity to network”, says Elaine Penrose, graduate recruitment partner at Hogan Lovells.
She adds: “Often for people who are LGBT, it’s a big factor for them whether they think a firm will be accepting and open to who they are. The purpose of the event is to say we’re open to diversity, we have people who have come through and to encourage students to apply.
“I’m married to a woman, am a newly made up partner and I trained with the firm and I think it’s important that students do not self-deselect and they give themselves the best chance. I myself, coming through the ranks, have never felt that I had to hide who I was in any way.”
Students will have to apply to the event to ensure they meet the general requirements of graduate recruitment at the firms.
For further details and an application form, email firstname.lastname@example.org or visit the graduate recruitment website of any associated firm.
Students must apply to attend the event by 16 November.
Last year, a survey conducted by the Interlaw Diversity Forum revealed that 70 per cent of LGBT lawyers would be encouraged to apply for judicial office if there were greater candidness from LGBT judges. (7 July 2011)
