City Law School is to offer its legal advice clinic for businesses as an elective module to students for the first time this year.
City Enterprise Services, the volunteer run project created by Senior Lecturer, David Collins, and former student Eric Klotz, is staffed by students and supervised by professionals such as barristers, solicitors and accountants.
It offers legal and commercial advice to owners of small businesses and start-ups and gives students a practical understanding of relevant law including commercial contracts, intellectual property, employment and business planning.
In a statement David Collins commented: “The City Law School offers a great range of pro-bono opportunities aimed at helping people with benefits or landlord disputes but this is the first project completely dedicated to commercial endeavours.
“The only way to get a job in law today is to have commercial awareness and this clinic offers students the opportunity to gain that experience while working on their degrees. In keeping with its strong professional focus, the City Law School is at the forefront of this initiative by offering a commercial, clinic-based module, the only one of its kind in the UK,” he said.
Students will be eligible to take the module in the third year of the undergraduate LLB and during the second year of the postgraduate LLB. Students on the Graduate Diploma in Law will also be able to volunteer at the clinic in the second term of the academic year.
