Why did you decide to train as a solicitor?

I was attracted to a challenging career and a good salary.

What were the biggest challenges you faced when trying to secure a training contract?

Getting my foot in the door was the hardest part. It was tough to motivate myself to complete online applications alongside studying and a part-time job.

What was the toughest training contract interview question you were asked (at any firm) and how did you answer?

Out of those on the vacation scheme, which two hopefuls would you hire and which one would you fire?

I am pleased to say that I chose two hopefuls who are now my fellow trainees and the vac schemer that I chose to fire was unsuccessful! It’s a dog eat dog world!

Tell us a bit about the type of work handled by the department you’re in at the moment…

The majority of the work is asset management of large portfolios of commercial property.

This involves negotiating leases and licences for many different types of property from shopping centres to industrial units.

What are the most enjoyable aspects of your job?

Working in a team with colleagues who value your assistance and enjoy a good laugh inside and outside of the office.

It is also great to be able to get stuck into real work that is beneficial to the client and is directly connected to the success of their business.

What about your job didn’t you expect before you started?

The amount of business development and networking events that we are able to attend – this is actively encouraged and allows you to mix with other professionals in the local area. I have made friendships that will last and that will hopefully turn into business opportunities in the future.

Who’s the most recent email in your inbox from, and what’s it about?

It’s from a pro bono client called Simon. He congratulates me and the previous trainees who have dealt with this file for all of our hard work. The matter has recently completed and I can take all of the glory!

Where’s the best place to go to get your office’s gossip?

We have an informal meeting area which is great for a catch up with trainees to hear the latest gossip.

Describe your training partner in three words.

Tall, witty and approachable.

Tell us two truths and one lie about yourself (in any order).

  • I enjoy classical music on a long drive.
  • I can do a backflip.
  • I used to get paid to go to the cinema for my summer job.

If you had not decided to become a lawyer, what career would you have chosen?

A fireman

What advice would you give to someone who wants to pursue a career in law?

Always be confident in your ability and don’t give up if you are unsuccessful.I was able to build on the experience of each unsuccessful application and it was this which allowed me to secure my training contract in the end.
