Slaughters scores 95 per cent retention, topping magic circle

Slaughter and May has revealed a 95 per cent retention rate for its spring 2014 qualifiers, keeping 38 of 40 trainees.

The remaining two trainees decided not to apply for jobs at the firm. All 38 will qualify into the London office and are on permanent contracts.

Graduate recruitment partner Robert Byk said: “We are delighted that our retention rate continues to be very high – our recruitment has always been focused on long term retention and career development.”

The rate marks a rise in retention for the firm from last spring, when it kept on 37 of 43 trainees, translating to a retention rate of 86 per cent.

Slaughter and May is the last of the UK top ten firms to release its March retention figures. DLA Piper has no spring qualifiers, while Norton Rose Fulbright’s final-seat trainees do not reach the end of their training contracts until May due to a change in the firm’s seat system.

In all, 21 firms have released their results, with a total of 414 of 483 qualifiers retained – just under 86 per cent.

Meanwhile, Slaughters has extended its commitment to the profession-wide social mobility initiative PRIME, saying that it would continue to support the programme for another three years.
