UWE and CMS Cameron McKenna join forces

CMS Cameron McKenna has teamed up with University of West England (UWE) to offer LPC students a work placement.

Students will be selected on the basis of their LPC performance rather than previous academic performance.

UWE’s Bristol Institute of Legal Practice (BILP) is using this method of assessment for the first time to select a student for its reserved place on CMS Cameron McKenna’s vacation scheme.

The highest-scoring civil litigation and property LPC students at BILP will be interviewed for a two week placement at the firm’s Bristol office.

BILP’s LPC head Dagmar Steffens said: “ There will be six students interviewed and even if they are not successful at interview it will be beneficial because they are getting interview practice with a great firm.

“We were keen to somehow link the vacation scheme with performance on the course. In my mind, I would like to do this with other firms. It is a convenient and transparent way of selecting students and we will see how this works with CMS… we might add a couple of firms to the scheme next year on similar terms as CMS, if that is what they desire, once we have gathered experience for the future with the CMS placement process this year.”

This method of selection means that there is still a chance for students who may have underperformed at A-level to benefit from a vacation scheme.

Last summer, BILP added a new raft of firms and companies to its students’ work opportunities (30 April 2012).
