Three US firms post strong autumn 2016 retention

Four more law firms have posted their retention results for autumn 2016.

Covington & Burling has kept on seven of seven trainees, matching its 2015 performance. Two of the newly-qualified solicitors will join the corporate team, two go to dispute resolution, with the remaining three taking up roles in employment, life sciences and tech/media.

Meanwhile, fellow American firm Cleary Gottlieb has retained all nine of its qualifiers, while another, K&L Gates has kept on six of seven trainees, or 86 per cent.

In the North West, Brabners made offers to all six of its qualifiers, with four accepting. Two joined the real estate team with the other two going to the employment and corporate departments. Brabners said that one of those who left decided to go travelling while the other got a job with a London firm.

The results mean that 17 firms have now published their retention results, with 300 out of 339 qualifiers kept on at the firm that trained them, or 88.5 per cent.

Shearman & Sterling, which has kept on all 13 of its trainees, is the best performing firm so far.
