Taylor Wessing’s retention slumps to 70 per cent

Taylor Wessing has revealed that it will retain just 70 per cent of its trainees in newly-qualified positions.

The top 20 firm admitted that it was “disappointed” with the statistic but said that it hoped that its retention would recover for future intakes. The firm has given 16 jobs to a cohort of 23, after receiving 20 applications. Some trainees chose not to apply to the firm for personal reasons, such as relocation.

All trainees will join the London office. One trainee will qualify into construction, another will go to the corporate department, two will qualify into disputes will three will work within employment. Two trainees will qualify into the finance department, two will go to intellectual property, one is to work in the private client practice and another two will qualify into the real estate department.

Last autumn, Taylor Wessing announced that 86 per cent of its qualifying trainees would stay with the firm, giving 19 of 22 second-years NQ positions. In spring 2013 it took the same numbers on in an NQ capacity.

Graduate recruitment partner Tim Worden said: “We always try to retain as many NQs as possible; having trained them we expect them to be first-rate associates with good prospects for continued career growth at Taylor Wessing.

“It’s obviously disappointing that our retention rate isn’t as high as normal this year. Every year we try our best to match the needs of our various practice areas with the areas into which our trainees wish to qualify, but it’s not always easy to find the perfect match. We hope retention will be back up to normal levels again next year.”
