Taylor Wessing is to offer students at the London School of Economics (LSE), King’s College London and University College London (UCL) the chance to win a week’s work experience at the firm’s London office if they participate in its Commercial Challenge this year.
The decision follows feedback from students on what the most valuable prize would be.
The challenge requires teams to take part in two rounds, including a conference call with a client. Successful teams will proceed to the third round on 7 December, when they will deliver a presentation to a panel of judges including lawyers at Taylor Wessing. Winners will also enjoy a meal at a top London restaurant.
The firm’s legal recruitment manager Keith Surgenor said: “We asked a number of students on our vacation schemes what would make a good prize for the challenge this year and they said that most students are particularly keen to get work experience since it gives them not only the experience of working at a law firm, but also something to talk about at an interview.”
Work experience opportunities at the firm are not restricted to students at LSE, King’s and UCL. Taylor Wessing also plans to hold a series of mini-Commercial Challenges during its open days, which take place on 5 December in Cambridge and Oxford and 11 January in Durham.
The winner of each of these open day challenges will also be offered a week’s work experience at the firm.
As in previous years, this year’s challenge will be based on a real corporate deal that has been handled by Taylor Wessing during the year.
Surgenor hopes the challenge will “give students a feel for the sort of work the firm does and the commercial advice it provides”.
