I have been offered an NQ role in the seat I want but it requires me to move abroad for 6months- what should I do?
I have been really lucky and been offered a NQ role at my law firm. But it requires me to move abroad for a period of time (I have been told about 6months). I really don’t want to go abroad as have several commitments in England but it seems clear this is my only option for an NQ role at this firm. What should I do?
If it’s the firm you want to be at in the long-run then take the offer! You’d be a fool not to.
Well, it looks like the age-old dilemma between career and personal life. It looks like you’ll have to closely evaluate what your commitments here are, if they could be somehow continued from abroad (example, via the Internet?) and how much they mean to you. Is there some way you could temporarily transfer control over to a delegated person for your time away? I would remind you however that there is a severe shortage of legal jobs at the moment – especially in light of the economy few firms are willing to keep open emptying posts let alone create new ones, so how important are these commitments? If they are hobby-related commitments then perhaps you could delegate responsibility, if they are caring for family perhaps seek respite care for them or request other family members to take them on whilst you work?
But in short, as I said above, you must ultimatly choose between your personal life and your professional development. Good luck whatever you choose!
