Shearman, Latham and Mills & Reeve among latest to reveal autumn retention

Five more firms have posted their retention rate for autumn 2014.

Mills & Reeve is to retain 84 per cent of its qualifiers. The national firm has 19 qualifying trainees across its offices. It made NQ job offers to 16 of them, and all accepted. 

US duo Shearman and Sterling and Latham & Watkins will keep on 75 per cent and 89 per cent of their qualifiers respectively.

Of its 18 qualifiers, Latham offered roles to 17, with 16 accepting. The firm has more than doubled its trainee intake in the last six years, and kept on 93 per cent of its qualifiers in 2013 (22 Aug 13). 

Shearman has held on to nine out of its 12 qualifiers, down from 85 per cent retention in 2013, and the firm’s worst result since 2009.

Meanwhile, another US firm, Morrison & Foerster, will keep two out of its three qualifiers, in its corporate and litigation departments, while Newcastle’s Muckle is to retain two out of four, in the real estate and commercial teams. The firm said it would have retained all four, but two are relocating for family reasons.

The results mean that 32 firms have now reported results, with a total of 535 out of 638 NQs staying on at the firm that trained them.
