RPC has confirmed that it will offer training contracts at its Bristol outpost from September 2013.
The firm has responded to greater levels of work at its new base and will recruit one trainee for September 2013, although more are likely to be recruited from 2014, depending on the levels of work the office experiences.
RPC’s managing partner Jonathan Watmough said: “The amount of work we handle in Bristol has increased hugely since we opened there last year, and the plan is to continue to grow. That work is being serviced by an expanding team of lawyers who we have either recruited locally or have moved from London.
“This has given us the ideal platform to launch a dedicated Bristol training contract, and allows us to mirror the trainee experience that our new recruits enjoy in London, both in terms of the kind of work they handle and the level of responsibility they are given.”
He continued: “The plan had always been to grow our trainee cohort in Bristol. Up until now our trainee population in Bristol has largely been made up of secondments from London – where we have had two London-based trainees at any one time working a seat in Bristol. But we had always intended to support the growth of the office with a dedicated trainee contingent in the city; we are now at a point that makes this plan viable, both from a pure business perspective and in terms of the range of experience a Bristol-based trainee can expect to enjoy.”
Watmough added that any future expanson would be driven by the growth of the Bristol office. He explained: “If the amount of work that we handle out of Bristol carries on growing to the extent we expect it to then there is every chance that the number of trainees there will grow in tandem.”
The training contract will begin this September and applications close on 8 August.
Lawyer 2B revealed last month that the top 50 firm was considering offering training contracts at its newly-opened Bristol base, following a rise in firm-wide revenue increase at the 2012/13 year end (14 June 2013). RPC unveiled a 20 per cent overall rise in revenue from £68m in 2011/12 to to £82.1m.
Recruitment partner Simon Goldring told Lawyer 2B at the time that the firm was exploring expansion options in Bristol, including whether to offer training contracts in the city.
The Bristol office opened following the hire of seven insurance partners from CMS Cameron McKenna in the city (3 January 2012) and the firm also launched in Hong Kong office in August 2012 (4 April 2012) after the opening of its first overseas base in Singapore (27 October 2011). The firm plans to second trainees to Hong Kong and Singapore in the future, but has no set dates for this as yet.
