Osborne Clarke hits 100 per cent retention

Osborne Clarke is to retain all of its spring 2014 qualifiers, across its Bristol, London and Reading offices.

The firm is keeping on all six trainees in newly-qualified positions. Two will qualify into its Bristol commercial team, one will qualify into the London commercial team and another is joining the London real estate department. One trainee will be based in the London financial services and regulatory team while another is due to join the Reading real estate department.

The result marks a rise from spring 2013, when the firm retained just 56 per cent of its cohort, with four of seven trainees staying on.

Training principal Nick Johnson said: “Retention rates are not the be-all and end-all for us but it is really good to have six high calibre trainees and to be able to offer them all jobs.

“It’s down to the fact that we are in growth mode but are keeping trainee intakes relatively lean. We’re able to give them a lot of responsibility and it’s partially just down to them being particularly high calibre.”

He added: “Four out of the six came through our vacation scheme, which is a sign of the times. We are increasingly relying on the vacation scheme when recruiting people.”

Last autumn, Osborne Clarke retained all eight trainees (9 August 2013).
