Mills & Reeve’s retention rate skyrockets to its highest in three years

Mills & Reeve has revealed a retention rate of 85 per cent, a marked recovery for the top 50 firm.

It is keeping on 17 of its 20 second-year trainees in newly-qualified (NQ) roles. This year’s results follow a rate of 76 per cent last September when the firm kept on 16 of 21 qualifying trainees and a lowly 45 per cent in September 2011 when it kept on 10 of 22. Its best retention rate of recent years came in September 2010, when 21 of 23 qualifiers, or 91 per cent, accepted NQ roles.

Of the 17 trainees staying with Mills & Reeve as NQs, four will work in corporate and commercial, in which much of the firm’s growth has been focused over the 2011/12 financial year. Three will stay on in the employment department, another three will be retained by the insurance team and two will be NQs in real estate. Planning, agriculture, private tax, construction and disputes will take one apiece.

Eight of the future NQs will work in the Cambridge office, four will work in Birmingham, three in Norwich and one in London, while another will split their time between Bimingham and Manchester. The Leeds office will not take any qualifiers this time round.

Mills & Reeve graduate recruitment manager Fiona Medlock said: “We’re delighted with our 85 per cent retention rate and even more so that we’ve been able to offer permanent positions to all our trainees.”

The firm merged with Manchester firm George Davies on 1 June 2013, boosting numbers to 870 staff and creating an expected combined revenue of £77m (24 April 2013).
