The London School of Economics (LSE) has scooped the top prize for the ‘Taylor Wessing Commercial Challenge’ after beating rival London universities in a pitch for the legal work of a fictional management buyout.
The triumphant team, ‘Long Island’, had the task of delivering its pitch to the prospective client’s ‘Management Board’, while demonstrating top legal skills and winning business acumen.
Taylor Wessing’s graduate recruitment partner Jayne Schnider said: “The finalists showed us that they really understand that clients are looking for more than just legal advice from their lawyers – they really have to demonstrate that they really understand their clients’ businesses and the industries in which they operate. Many congratulations to all who took part.”
The annual event’s three finalists included LSE, University College London and King’s College London, which had the winning team last year, with the judging panel made up of Taylor Wessing’s campus champions and joined by former winner of The Apprentice and CEO of Bright Ideas Trust, Tim Campbell.
The winning team including Barry Hughes, Rui Da Silva Laires, Sarah Gledhill and Stephanie Moffat collected their trophy from senior partner Martin Winter and were then whisked away for a private trip on the London Eye and celebratory meal at a top restaurant.
Elsewhere, Allen & Overy also hosted its grand final of its first ever ‘Think! Business Challenge’ this week, with City University receiving the top prize after beating over 60 teams in total, with LSE and Nottingham coming second and third respectively.
The final saw 13 universities competing against each other for points in a range of commercial challenges, which were assessed by partners and trainees.
