The Institute of Legal Executives (ILEX) has launched a new system of membership grades with wider reaching requirements for Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Under the new system the new role of affiliate member has been introduced and students who have achieved their ILEX level 3 or ILEX level 6 can now call themselves graduate members.

Head of corporate affairs Helen Sympson said: “We’ve made the changes to encourage more people to take the ILEX route and creating more levels that people can enter as widens access to the ILEX route for people.”

ILEX is now offering new membership categories, which students can join according to their experience and qualifications held.

Student members are for those wishing to enter the legal profession and who have no relevant legal qualifications.

Affiliate member status is for those with at least one ILEX Level 3 unit qualification, or who have completed a relevant legal qualification at Level 2, or gained at least three years’ work experience.

Associate member is for those who have completed their ILEX Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice, or who are graduates holding qualifying law degrees.

Associate members will also be entitled to use the letters A.Inst.L.Ex after their name, and be required to undertake eight hours of CPD work.

Graduate member status is for those who have completed both their ILEX Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice and their ILEX Level 6 Professional Higher Diploma in Law and Practice, including the ILEX Graduate Fast-Track Diploma, or who are Legal Practice Course or Bar Vocational Course graduates.

Graduate members will also be entitled to use the letters G.Inst.L.Ex after their name, and be required to undertake 12 hours of CPD.

Members can call themselves a fellow when they have successfully completed a period of qualifying employment and will be eligible to use the term Legal Executive and use the letters F.Inst.L.Ex.
