Editor’s weekly: Top of the firms

If your heart is set on training as a lawyer in the big smoke you’d be advised to check out ‘The Sunday Times’ Top 100 Companies to Work For’ survey.

As we reported earlier this week leading City law firms Berwin Leighton Paisner, Charles Russell, CMS Cameron McKenna and Olswang all crashed out of the list after being ranked in the top 100 in 2009 (read full story).

In stark contrast Manchester-based Pannone has been hailed as the top legal employer in the survey, marking the seventh consecutive year the firm has been rated among the UK’s top 20 employers.

Staff at the Manchester-based law firm, which took the number three spot in the overall legal rankings, agreed that their stress levels were low (82%) and most are happy with the balance between their work and home lives (73%).

Elsewhere, regional firm Mills & Reeve managed to secure a position at 72 compared to 83 in 2009. Meanwhile, a new entry onto the list is Tunbridge Wells-based Cripps Harries Hall, which came in at 97 proving that you don’t have to be based in the capital to benefit from the best working environment.

So before you join the bulk of your peers by jumping on the first train to London it might just be work checking out firms nearer to home.
