Who/what inspired you to be a lawyer? People who said I couldn’t be one.

What things did you wish you knew before embarking on a legal career?  Don’t ask when the tea break is on your first day.

What does your typical day involve?  Doing, selling and managing.

What are the most challenging aspects of your job? The combination of having to be an excellent doer, manager and seller 24/7.  It’s also the most fun part!

What has been the highlight of your career so far? Some of the people I’ve had the privilege to meet and work with.

What are the best aspects of your job? Constantly being challenged.

What are the worst aspects of your job?  Lawyers who want to ‘win’ rather than solve.

What tips would you give to students who want to break into the legal profession?  Understand very clearly what clients want their lawyer to do and why you are that person.

What are the most common mistakes you’ve seen candidates making? Not having the understanding above.

How has the legal market changed since the days you were a trainee?  You will not be one type of lawyer in one discipline throughout your career – you must, more than ever, be adaptable.

What impact has the recession had on your firm? Increased focus on what will make us stronger.
