Weightmans has revamped its trainee application process with the help of an external occupational psychologist.
One of the most noticeable differences potential trainees will see is the removal of multiple questions from the application form. The shorter questions have been replaced with a single essay-style question focusing on client experience.
The changes to the application are being trialled with those applying to Weightmans’ vacation scheme and to a lesser extent with the firm’s trainees.
The firm has also introduced a number of online assessments to its application, including situational judgment tests.
Weightmans recruitment manager James See said: “We are redesigning our assessment centre. What we are trying to do is make the half-day assessment centre look like a half-day in the life of a trainee.”
During the half-day assessment applicants will undertake a number of tasks including a group activity, which will be a task that a trainee might be given.
HR director Sam Airey said the changes are designed to recognise that candidates come from a variety of backgrounds, as Weightmans does not want to unduly favour those apply straight from university.
