A trainee solicitor is celebrating after a film she produced swept the board at a prestigious New York film festival.
Tara Dean, a trainee at Bates Wells & Braithwaite (BWB), produced the dark comedy A Higher Agency, starring Sir Antony Sher and Jack Davenport (who made his name in the law firm drama This Life). At the First Run Film Festival for up-and-coming talent, the film completed a clean sweep, winning the best film, best director and best screenwriting awards.
Past winners of the best film award include Ang Lee, the director of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
Dean, who studied film studies at university and attended a performing arts school, told Lawyer 2B: “I thought it might win something, but not in a million years did I think it would win everything. I’m not sure, but I think this is the first time a film has done this.”
The film was completed in March and Dean said it was no problem producing it while working as a trainee. “It’s surprising what you can do in an hour of emails after work,” she revealed.
Dean will join BWB’s film department upon qualification in September and will specialise in advising up-and-coming UK film-making talent, although this does not signal an end to her own involvement in the movie business.
“In the States a lot of entertainment lawyers are still producing, and that’s what I want to do,” she added.
