Pensioner, 85, welcomed on Aberdeen law course

A first-year law student at Aberdeen University has just celebrated his 85th birthday. Alfie Alexander is the UK’s oldest student and has already notched up honours degrees in geography and ecology since he retired from the butcher’s trade.

After struggling through some red tape, Alexander is now enjoying life as a student lawyer and is also an active member of a handful of student committees.

‘A law degree is well worth the effort. By studying law you’re offering a new spectrum in this crazy world’

“I’ve been welcomed and given great consideration and support since joining the law school,” he told Lawyer 2B. “Law is a challenge and to me is most interesting. A good memory and a will to read cases is an essential part of law school. My advice to the elderly is go back to college and keep your brain active – it’s one part of the body that is irreplaceable.”

As Alexander will be almost 90 when he completes his legal studies, he does not hold out much hope of landing a training contract at a major City firm. However, he encourages other students to work hard. “A law degree is well worth the effort. By studying law you’re offering a new spectrum in this crazy world,” he said.

“What can I get out of it? Not much, unless there are good opportunities in heaven,” he joked. “My philosophy in life, especially since I have gone to university, is mix with young people, think young and act young.”
