Pensioner, 85, welcomed on Aberdeen law course

A first-year law student at Aberdeen University has just celebrated his 85th birthday. Alfie Alexander is the UK&#39s oldest student and has already notched up honours degrees in geography and ecology since he retired from the butcher&#39s trade.

After struggling through some red tape, Alexander is now enjoying life as a student lawyer and is also an active member of a handful of student committees.

&#39A law degree is well worth the effort. By studying law you&#39re offering a new spectrum in this crazy world&#39

&#34I&#39ve been welcomed and given great consideration and support since joining the law school,&#34 he told Lawyer 2B. &#34Law is a challenge and to me is most interesting. A good memory and a will to read cases is an essential part of law school. My advice to the elderly is go back to college and keep your brain active &#45 it&#39s one part of the body that is irreplaceable.&#34

As Alexander will be almost 90 when he completes his legal studies, he does not hold out much hope of landing a training contract at a major City firm. However, he encourages other students to work hard. &#34A law degree is well worth the effort. By studying law you&#39re offering a new spectrum in this crazy world,&#34 he said.

&#34What can I get out of it? Not much, unless there are good opportunities in heaven,&#34 he joked. &#34My philosophy in life, especially since I have gone to university, is mix with young people, think young and act young.&#34
