Olpas set to change offer deadlines

The Online Pupillage Application System (Olpas) will change less than a year after its launch.

The Bar Council has found cracks in the scheme, which replaced the Pupillage

Application Clearing House in March.Olpas researcher Charles Tyler said changes might be made to the offer dates as sets have complained that the system is ineffective.

Some sets have objected to the summer offer deadline of 31 July, claiming it causes a scramble for the best candidates and some sets have been tempted to offer more places than they have.

Tyler said: “If the proposal goes ahead, chambers would have more time to arrange interviews.” But Andrew Baker of 20 Essex Street says this would defeat the purpose of a summer recruitment period. “The process would go on until September and students would go to bar school without knowing if they had secured pupillage.”
