North West pro bono in fine fettle

North West lawyers contributed 16,000 pro bono hours in 2003, a survey by DLA trainees found, challenging the perception that it is predominantly a London-centric activity.

The survey of more than 780 lawyers in the region was undertaken by 23 trainees from DLAs Manchester office in conjunction with LawWorks North, the northern branch of the Solicitors Pro Bono Group.

The research found that 39 per cent of solicitors, barristers and in-housers in the region are involved in pro bono work.

Of those who did not participate in pro bono, 57 per cent said they would consider pro bono opportunities in the future if they were given some guidance on how to approach the topic.
