Global legal coalition finds corruption in Zimbabwe

An international coalition of lawyers has slammed the legal system in Zimbabwe.

Bar leaders from Australia, Hong Kong, Ireland, Scotland, South Africa, New Zealand and the UK visited Zimbabwe in April 2004 to produce a report on the countrys legal system.

Published in December, it paints a picture of violence, arrest and intimidation against Zimbabwes judges and lawyers.

The report states: “The legal system in Zimbabwe remains, in form, civilised and developed, if under-resourced. In substance, it has been distorted and subverted for the illegitimate maintenance of political power.”

It adds that Zimbabwe Chief Justice Godfrey Chidyausiku was appointed directly from the High Court ahead of many Supreme Court justices.
