Dentons jumps on trainee deferral bandwagon

City-based Denton Wilde Sapte has become the latest firm to ask future trainees to defer their start dates by offering them a £5,000 cheque


Dentons, which hires around 50 trainees a year, has sought to defer the start date of between 5 and 10 per cent of the trainees from its September 2003 intake. The option to defer was offered on a first-come, first-served basis and was taken up by five trainees.

A Dentons spokesperson said that the firm is reducing numbers because, due to the global downturn, there is not enough work to keep trainees occupied, which is detrimental to their development.

Dentons confirmed that it is offering trainees who applied to defer the same subsistence that the firm paid during their LPC year.

Meanwhile, accountancy-tied firm KLegal has hiked its payments to appease trainees who were randomly selected to compulsorily defer their start dates to 2004. The firm originally offered £2,500, which is £7,500 less than the amount paid to its trainees who deferred voluntarily last July. But in March it agreed to pay the trainees £6,000.
