The College of Law is theleading provider of legal education. We’re the UK’s longest established and only truly specialist law school, so we’re completely dedicated to providing first class legal training.

At The College of Law you’ll get the best possible start to your legal career. With centres in Birmingham, Chester, Guildford, London, Manchester and York, we offer more course options in more locations than any other provider.

What’s on offer

Our innovative courses are designed and taught by lawyers, with a clear focus on building the practical skills, commercial awareness and independent thinking you’ll need to succeed.

This is supported by an award-winning pro bono programme and the largest and best-resourced careers service in UK legal education. You’ll benefit from excellent tutor support, state-of-the-art IT facilities and access to unrivalled online and offline learning methods and resources – and all relevant course materials, text books and case books are included in your fee.

GDL – Graduate Diploma in Law (full and part-time)

Our GDL has been designed to build knowledge and skills that more than match a law degree – with a clear focus on preparing you for life in practice. The academic training is built around real-life examples and case studies and our unique ‘Preparing for practice’ module will provide you with practical, skills-based training, as well as an opportunity to develop your commercial and ethical awareness. You can also tailor the independent research work you carry out to reflect the areas of law in which you intend to specialise – enhancing your career prospects. Students who pass our GDL are guaranteed a place on our LPC (as long as they apply within two years), and when you go on to successfully complete your LPC or BVC at the College, you’ll graduate with an LL.B law degree, without the need to study or pay for additional modules.

LPC – Legal Practice Course (full and part-time)

Our LPC is rigorous and practical and designed to make you perfect for practice. The majority of teaching is in small, student-centred workshops, and you’ll get hands-on experience with plenty of opportunities to practise your legal skills through real cases in a context appropriate to your area of interest. As well as this high level of face to face teaching, we fully utilise the most up to date e-learning through our unique i-Tutorials (all available as podcasts or to download). We have the widest selection of vocational elective subjects available and led the way in offering three different LPC routes – commercial and private, corporate, public legal services – allowing you to specialise in your chosen field.

BVC – Bar Vocational Course (full and part-time)

Our BVC has been designed to resemble working life as a barrister as closely as possible. The course is litigation-based with a heavy emphasis on developing and honing skills. Study follows a logical, realistic process from initial instruction to final appeal, and learning is based around the seven core skills and three knowledge areas stipulated by the Bar Standards Board. Most of your learning will be in small groups – many with as little as four students – and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to put your learning into action through: practitioner evenings (where you can demonstrate your advocacy skills in front of practising barristers and get feedback), mock trials, court visits, mooting, negotiating and advocacy competitions, and our tailored pro bono programmes.

LL.M – Masters in law degrees

LL.M in Professional Legal Practice

Our LL.M in Professional Legal Practice is designed to build in-depth, practical knowledge of a wide range of specialist legal practice areas. Modules cover the full spectrum of legal practice, from criminal and family law to international corporate law. You can opt for supervised online or blended learning modules, giving you the flexibility to choose how you learn.

LL.M in International Legal Practice

Our LL.M in International Legal Practice is run in conjunction with the IBA, the world’s leading organisation of international legal practitioners, bar associations and law societies. As the name suggests, it is specifically aimed at building cross-border legal knowledge, with a choice of corporate specialisms developed with leading global law firms including Allen & Overy LLP, DLA Piper LLP and Baker & McKenzie. It’s studied exclusively via supervised online modules, meaning that there’s no need to attend face-to-face training.
