Arnold’s UK office takes on trainees

US firm Arnold & Porter is recruiting its first ever trainees, due to start in the London office in autumn 2004.

Andrew Hooles, a partner in the intellectual property and technology group, said five training contracts would be offered with a minimum starting salary of 30,000 per year.

Fellow US firm Weil Gotshal & Manges pays London trainees 35,000, while last year White & Case offered 33,000.

Hooles said the trainees will need to get used to the firm’s “interesting way of operating”, which puts lawyers from different specialist areas in the same office.

Arnold & Porter has already received a “substantial” number of applications for the eight summer placements that are also available.
