6 Pump Court closes its doors for business

One of the bars leading clinical negligence sets, 6 Pump Court, dissolved on 17 January.

The set not to be confused with Stephen Hockman QCs set of the same name blames the dissolution partly on forthcoming cuts in fees for clinical negligence work and possible administrative cost burdens arising from the impact of Sir David Clementis review of the legal professions regulation.

6 Pump Courts head and only silk Kieran Coonan QC has joined Robert Seabrooke QCs One Crown Office Row along with senior-juniors AndrewKennedyand Christine Lambert. Six tenants joined Hailsham Chambers and a further 15 are looking for new homes.

Thesetsmembers agreed unanimously to dissolve even though, according to Coonan, the sets turnover has grown year-on-year since 1990 and had its highest income in its 39-year history in 2003-04.

Changes in the clinical negligence field and cuts in fees for criminal legal aid work have also been blamed for
the collapse.
