Weil Gotshal & Manges has achieved a newly qualified (NQ) retention rate of 69 per cent for September 2012.
The US firm is keeping 9 of its 13 autumn qualifying trainee solicitors after offering 12 of the 13 posts at the firm, one of the trainees decided to opt out of the process for personal reasons.
A spokesperson for the firm said that the bulk of the trainees had wanted a position in corporate but that the firm was unable to offer all of them their preferred role.
Accordingly, the firm has dropped from the 75 per cent achieved in September 2011 back to just under the 70 per cent for the previous year.
The news follows the disclosure last week of retention rates for Herbert Smith and Norton Rose of 80 per cent and 78 per cent respectively.
