Schillings has cancelled its 2012 training contracts following a review of staffing requirements.

The firm, which has a trainee solicitor cohort of four, advertised for two vacancies in its graduate recruitment campaign. It is understood that both aspiring lawyers due to join the firm in September have had their training contracts cancelled.

Chief executive Rod Christie-Miller said: “We have reviewed our staffing requirements and have determined that we do not need to add to our current and planned group of trainee solicitors.”

The news comes as Schillings announces that partner Gideon Benaim has left the firm after 13 years working as a high profile sports and media litigator (8 June 2012).

The firm is also losing senior associate Matthew Himsworth, who is leaving to set up his own practice concentrating on sports clients.

    Is there nothing to stop firms cancelling training contracts already given to people? This seems incredibly unfair to those who have potentially given up other offers and the chance to apply for other training contracts in the time since they were offered said contract. This is surely going to give people who have accepted offers nightmares..
