Freshfields and BakerMac reveal retention

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Baker & McKenzie have announced their retention rates for their spring 2014 qualifying trainees, following a season of good news for the magic circle.

Freshfields’ rate of 80 per cent marks a slight drop from this time last year, when the firm retained 85 per cent of its qualifiers. This year it is keeping on 35 of 44 trainees, compared 39 of 46 in spring 2013.

The result is the lowest of all the magic circle firms, with Clifford Chance retaining 94 per cent (45 of 48), Linklaters keeping on 86 per cent (50 of 58) and Allen & Overy 84 per cent (41 of 49) of trainees.

Meanwhile, Baker & McKenzie is keeping on 15 of 17 qualifying trainees, translating to a rate of 88 per cent. Trainee principal Simon Porter said: ”We are pleased to have been able to make offers to such a high percentage of trainees. The quality of our trainees and associates is key to the success of Baker & McKenzie. We invest heavily in recruiting the best talent and in providing training and development to our trainees to help them fulfil their potential. Our priority is always to retain the best and these numbers reflect this.”
