Dechert is offering a £3,000 scholarship to future College of Law (CoL) students following its decision to name the law school giant as its exclusive course provider.
The US firm’s award will supplement the government funding of the first-year £9,000 fee for the two-year qualifying law degree (LLB). The student will also get the opportunity to complete a week of work experience at Dechert’s London office.
CoL head of business development Martin Smith said: “The Dechert scholarship will give the winner a boost towards achieving their goal of a successful career in law as well as an invaluable opportunity to gain work experience with a top-flight international law firm.”
Dechert is the second firm to offer a scholarship programme for the CoL LLB, with Pannone offering a similar award in January (19 January 2012).
The news comes as the firm chooses to ditch BPP Law School (BPP) as its exclusive Legal Practice Course (LPC) provider in favour of the CoL, due to the introduction of the CoL’s new International LPC.
From September, the US firm’s future trainees will study the corporate LPC, while students enrolling in 2013 will get the opportunity to undertake the International LPC.
Graduate recruitment partner Andrew Hearn said: “So much of the work that Dechert trainees do is multi-jurisdictional, so we’re very keen to get our future trainees thinking about law from a global perspective before they join us.”
Dechert follows in CMS Cameron McKenna’s footsteps, after the top 20 firm formed a new partnership with CoL to support the launch of the International LPC earlier this year (25 April 2012).
