  • Lucky enough to have been at Nottingham during his time there. The focus on the commercial acumen is understandable - but he also showed a genuine interest in the students. Best of luck to him.

  • Good luck Nigel!!! The legal education sector is losing a legend and will not be the same again.

  • He (and the board who approved it) will always be remembered most for the half million pound per annum package which he has for many years taken from what is supposed to be a charity.

  • "a sleepy hollow of an institution, mired in its monopoly-supplier history and still stultified by a cosy relationship with the Law Society."

I was a student at the CoL some years before Savage arrived and remember it as a high quality educational institution which reflected well the best principles of the solicitors profession. What's more, the fees were reasonable and my debts were quickly paid off as I progressed to qualification. Growth for the sake of it shouldn't be applauded without critical reflection. Nor should we forget that salary and bonus packages nearing the half-million mark can only come from the pockets of students paying much higher fees than I did and carrying the resulting debt for far far longer.

  • not that long ago it cost £2,000 to do the LPC (around 1994) - the way legal education has changed and the exploitation of students by the providers is shameful
