Clifford Chance launches awards to highlight corporate responsibility

Clifford Chance is putting corporate responsibility (CR) at the top of every employee’s agenda by launching an awards initiative to recognise excellence within the firm.

The magic circle firm hopes the awards will prompt staff to take responsibility for driving the firm’s CR strategy.

Clifford Chance managing partner David Childs and senior partner Stuart Popham are both spearheading the new initiative.

Childs said: “We’re very clear that our commitment to corporate responsibility is not solely for the good times.

“In tough environments our continued investment for the long-term in these areas is even more important. However, much of what we do as a firm is dependent on the drive of individuals.”

All employees at Clifford Chance are eligible for the awards, with the shortlist being considered by a panel of experts. The winners will be announced at an awards dinner in December.

Popham said: “There are huge numbers of people across the firm who quietly, and often in their own time, direct their energies to supporting local communities, to those deprived of access to legal resource, to improving the firm’s environmental impact and to helping ensure that Clifford Chance delivers a workplace that actively encourages diversity.”

  • Having had the opportunity to attend the pro-bono advisory sessions that the firm's trainees provide at Stratford Community Centre, I am now convinced that this is something worthwhile and really useful to the generally disadvantaged community in East London. I am not aware of the other MC circles being so actively involved in practical advisory pro-bono work.
