Magic circle firm Allen & Overy (A&O) is hosting a groundbreaking event designed for talented disabled students and recent postgraduates who are interested in pursuing a career in law.
’Open 2011’, which is taking place tomorrow (21 January) will give aspiring lawyers with disabilities the opportunity to meet trainee solicitors, senior lawyers and recruiters from Clifford Chance, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Hogan Lovells and Linklaters as well as A&O.
A&O graduate recruitment manager Caroline Lindner said: “The legal sector recognises the importance of recruiting talented individuals regardless of their backgrounds,”
“We hope that by collaborating on this event we will be able to help individuals with disabilities who may not have considered a career in the legal sector make better informed decisions about their future career.”
The aim of this unique event is to enable students to come together with top law firms to air concerns about managing disability in a legal career and ask any pressing questions.
The event is open to students across the UK but applicants had to submit their CVs on application and any extenuating circumstances to ensure that the candidates are of top academic ability.

I am interested in knowing what exactly is considered as a disability? For instance, does it include speech - and write difficulties or diabetes?

The official definition for disability is: a physical or impairment that has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on a person's ability to perform normal day-to-day activities
So if the challenge you have with your speech does affect your ability to carry out day to day activities, it would indeed to be considered a disability.
